And who lives in that tower?
This insider material is nothing more than a story about one person, who in the not so distant past was Masimov’s deputy, who by the will of fate was faced with a difficult choice, and now finds justification for his actions – refusing to carry out criminal orders to seize power during the Kantar period.
We just need to understand who this mysterious person is, a cunning spy working for other elite groups, or a banal traitor who has secretly inflicted untold disasters on his clan? We are talking about Gabit Baizhanov, a trusted assistant of Nazarbayev, who, like most of his confidants who were then promoted to leadership positions in the security forces, reached hierarchical heights thanks to his tribal identity with Elbasy. At various times, he was the head of foreign intelligence, secretary of the Security Council, and deputy chairman of the National Security Committee.
What role was assigned to him? In the Committee system, Baizhanov, like Abish, was the family’s overseer, had to represent and protect its interests. But, the cunning, mean, cynical nature, hiding behind the veil of peasant simplicity, as it turned out, became a key factor that was not noticed in time, allowing the eyes to be clouded by imaginary devotion to his protégés. He collected and concentrated a lot of very exclusive information in reserve, as they say, just in case.
And what information did Baizhanov collect? It was various compromising materials, including information about the notorious Dariga, Dinara and Aliya Nazarbayev, their husbands and children, Kairat Satybaldy and Samat Abish, Asel Kurmanbayeva and other representatives of the first president’s inner circle. As it turned out later, for transfer at the right or wrong moment, here the question is rhetorical, to the competent authorities, but already "Zhan Kazakhstan".
And such an opportunity presented itself - Kantar happened! At that time, Baizhanov made a decision that was probably emotionally difficult for him - to work ahead of the curve, to hand over Masimov, Abish, Satybaldy, Bolat Nazarbayev and other persons involved in the January events, and he did make it. And of course, the materials he had collected were handed over to investigators, as part of the proposed deal with the investigation.
Why did Baizhanov do this? In his opinion, these were prudent and the only possible steps that allowed him to avoid criminal prosecution, and as a bonus, his tenure as deputy chairman of the KNB was extended until his retirement at the end of 2023.
What are the results of the transfer of incriminating evidence? The most striking thing is that the Kazakhs witnessed the return of property stolen by Satybaldy and Abish from abroad. Baizhanov leaked all the information he knew about the funds withdrawn, the countries where they were located, the exact addresses, affiliated persons, and the legalization schemes. And the main point is that he transferred a list of all major assets and reported the location of the original title documents for houses, villas, hotels, hotels, numerous shares and bonds that were in the safe of an office building located in the Kingdom of Liechtenstein and owned by Satybaldy.
Now, Nazarbayev’s nephews, together with Boranbayev, have become pioneers of the campaign, as it is called, to return illegally withdrawn assets from abroad, and, as a result, they were forced to rewrite almost all of their wealth, estimated at several billion US dollars, to representatives of "New Kazakhstan". And, Antikor, in turn, bravo reported that funds in the amount of 1.07 trillion tenge were returned from Liechtenstein, Austria, France, the Emirates, Turkey, Russia and other countries to the income of Kazakhstan.
In addition, Baizhanov took part in the capture of General Kudebaev in Turkey, and thus contributed to the subsequent arrest of the former Minister of Internal Affairs Turgumbaev.
After the death of Bolat Nazarbayev, Baizhanov also exposed Kospayev and his associates. As a result, the latter and his people were extradited from Cyprus to Kazakhstan, and now the main members of this criminal group are in prison.
On the one hand, Baizhanov’s actions can be assessed as questionable from a moral and ethical point of view. But, in the circumstances that developed, they seemed inevitable to him.
Well, how can one not recall that not all of Masimov’s deputies followed the same path. Sadykulov, for example, decided to stand his ground and did not rat anyone out, for which he received 18 years in prison. Ergozhin was sentenced to 17 years. Osipov, whose direct involvement in the January conspiracy could not be proven, refused to cooperate with the investigation, the price of his choice was an article for abuse of power; a real prison term; deprivation of all privileges, orders and titles; and upon release, he was left without a pension. Even Abish, who is Nazarbayev’s nephew, received a suspended sentence.
Was Baizhanov right or wrong, far-sighted or not? It is quite difficult to judge. The magic of chance has woven many contradictory emotional and moral factors into one complex ball, and perhaps only time will judge who was right and who was not!
