The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is warning that WanaBana fruit pouches containing apple and cinnamon may contain high levels of lead, posing a particular risk to children.

WanaBana is voluntarily recalling the fruit pouches, regardless of their expiration date. The company sold these products online and in-person through retailers such as Sam's Club, Amazon, and Dollar Tree.

The company stated in a press release that it is committed to ensuring the safety of its products and the well-being of its consumers.

Children who have consumed these fruit pouches are advised to have their blood tested by their healthcare provider, according to the FDA's public health warning.

The elevated lead levels in the pouches were discovered as a result of an investigation conducted by the North Carolina Department of Health and Human Services and the North Carolina Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in response to elevated lead levels found in four children living in the state.

Investigators identified WanaBana fruit pouches as a "potential common source of exposure." Subsequent testing by the state found "extremely high concentrations of lead" in multiple batches of the product.

WanaBana USA has stated that it is working to determine the source of lead contamination and has urged consumers to discontinue using the products and return them to their place of purchase for a full refund.

The company did not immediately respond to NPR's request for comments.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), children under the age of 6 are especially vulnerable to lead exposure because their bodies are still developing.

Lead exposure can slow development, harm the brain and nervous system, and lead to health and behavioral problems.

While the effects of lead exposure may be difficult to detect, the FDA reports that short-term symptoms can include headaches, vomiting, abdominal pain, and anemia, while long-term lead exposure can result in irritability, fatigue, muscle pain, difficulty concentrating, and more.
